If a man walks in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer.

But if he spends his days as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making the earth bald before her time, he is deemed an industrious and enterprising citizen.

 ~Henry David Thoreau

Egg Harbor Township

Environmental Commission

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abidith for ever

Ecclesiastes 1:4

The Egg Harbor Township Environmental Commission was established by ordinance consistent with state laws creating environmental commissions. The Commission is comprised of seven members (one of whom is also a member of the Planning Board), plus several ex-officio members.

Egg Harbor Township is located in Atlantic County, New Jersey and consists of approximately 68 square miles.  Roughly one half of the Township lies within the Pinelands National Preserve, with 100% of that area designated for high density growth.  The other half lies within the Coastal Area Facilities Review Act (CAFRA) and is considered environmentally sensitive.

The role of the Commission is to study, evaluate, and make recommendations to the Township Committee and the Planning Board regarding local environmental issues, including (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Clean water resources

  • Energy conservation and renewable energy resources

  • Air, noise, and light pollution

  • Preservation and use of parks and other open spaces

  • Land use

  • Protection of flora, fauna, soil and landscape throughout the Township.

In addition, they review the potential effects of applications before the Planning and the Zoning Boards. The Commission also provides environmental information to residents.

The Environmental Commission is committed to sustainability, a policy incorporating economic responsibility, environmental stewardship, and equitable, just social benefits into municipal decision-making.

The Commission maintains the Egg Harbor Township Arboretum & Nature Center.

The Commission also gives out yearly awards for:

Excellence in Commercial Landscaping

Individual Environmental Achievement
